A test of faith: The 2013 Yearend Throwback

With only hours to go before ushering in the new civil year, I would like to give you a rundown on what has transpired in the past twelve months. But before that, I would first give you a dose of your Biblical fix.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

READINGS AND PROPERS

Ordinary Form (Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God)

Prophecy: Num. 6:22-27
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Say to Aaron and his sons: Thus shall you bless the children of Israel, and you shall say to them:

The Lord bless thee, and keep thee.
The Lord shew his face to thee, and have mercy on thee.
The Lord turn his countenance to thee, and give thee peace.

And they shall invoke my name upon the children of Israel, and I will bless them.

Responsorial: Ps. 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8
R: May God bless us in His mercy

May God have mercy on us, and bless us:
may He cause the light of His countenance to shine upon us,
and may He have mercy on us.
That we may know Thy way upon earth:
Thy salvation in all nations.

Let the nations be glad and rejoice:
for Thou judgest the people with justice,
and directest the nations upon earth.

Let the people, O God, confess to Thee:
let all the people give praise to Thee.
May God bless us:
and all the ends of the earth fear Him.

Epistle: Gal. 4:4-7
Brethren: when the fulness of the time was come, God sent his Son, made of a woman, made under the law: That he might redeem them who were under the law: that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because you are sons, God hath sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying: Abba, Father. Therefore, now he is not a servant, but a son. And if a son, an heir also through God.

Gospel: Lk. 2:16-21
At that time: The shepherds came with haste: and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. And seeing, they understood of the word that had been spoken to them concerning this child. And all that heard wondered: and at those things that were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

And after eight days were accomplished, that the child should be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, which was called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

2013 THROWBACK

The year 2013 has been a test of faith to all of us.

It was in February when Pope Benedict XVI expressed his motive to resign from the papacy. Millions of Catholics reacted in this decision; some with sorrow, others with agitation, especially the traditionalist groups. This agitation was augmented when Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope, with a new name to call him: Francis. This was because then-Cardinal Bergoglio was more of a social worker and a priest of the people, being the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. But in the following months since his election, Pope Francis somehow relieved the more conservative traddies for defending his predecessor's motu proprio "Summorum Pontificum", which calls for the dignity of the Holy Mass both in its Extraordinary Form (a.k.a. the Latin Mass) and in its Ordinary Form (a.k.a. the Novus Ordo Mass); as well as other assurances.

The Pope visited the World Youth Day celebrations in Brazil; but there were things that made traditionalists gnash their teeth yet again because of the "watered-down" liturgies that, compared to the WYD in Madrid, was more bad-tasting.

Despite all of these, Pope Francis was loved by the people of Rome and of the world, whether legitimately in his teachings and catechisms, or in a bad light, in the twists of secular mainstream media. No wonder Time Magazine made him "Person of the Year".

Back at home, we have a mix of highs and lows in how our country fared in the world. More of bad news than good.

Prior to the Senatorial Elections last May, the Church in the Philippines is still healing from the wound she has received from the passage of the Reproductive Health Law. The Diocese of Bacolod has been balls-out in endorsing the politicians who opposed this measure and in recommending not to vote for the specific persons who advocate this statute. Anyway, the Supreme Court has released a status quo ante order demanding the withholding of the law's implementation.

Then suddenly, Janet Lim-Napoles came to the scene.

Aside from the corruption that gave way to a call for action, we at 100%KP believe that it was the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF a.k.a. Pork Barrel) that became the driving force for the passage of the RH Law, as well as the impeachment of former Chief Justice Renato Corona, and other anomalies that plagued our country.

On top of all these headaches were the heartbreaks of the nation as the people witnessed their efforts and aspirations razed to the ground (the Zamboanga skirmish), crumble to ruin (the earthquake in Bohol that destroyed homes and temples), and swept away by the waves (the wake of Supertyphoon Haiyan/Yolanda). In all these, it is the Asian escort fleet of the Bark of Peter who was the first to respond. Its sailors and marines worked round-the-clock to deliver relief and restoration at the soonest possible time; yet corrupt hearts still think about their personal gain, thus delaying the relief efforts.

Finally, this day. The last day of the year. With all these tear-jerking events, what have we learned so far?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

REFLECTIONS AND (PERSONAL) INSIGHTS

In the Prophecy of the Ordinary Form, we read the Priestly Blessing which the Lord gave to Moses and Aaron for the priests of the Old Covenant to say in blessing the chosen people. Today, we still recite this in our greetings to each other as manifestation of our royal and baptismal priesthood; and the ministerial priests of the New and Eternal Covenant still bless the people with the same words.

The Priestly Blessing can be divided into its three parts: "The Lord bless you and keep you…" is a manifestation of the Father's abundance of benefits. "The Lord show His face upon you and be merciful to you…" is a clear reference to the Incarnation of God the Son, the King of Mercy. "The Lord…give you His peace" is the reference for the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit.

Now in the Ordinary Form Epistle, St. Paul reminds us that God became one of us so that we may become like Him. He also exhorted in his Epistle to Titus (in which the Epistle of the Extraordinary Form is extracted from) that we should live in vigilance and holiness in order to achieve this.

Now, let me weave the Biblical passages in the best way possible. Just a warning: This is more of what I know and understand about these specific passages. If ever these cleared your mind, thank you very much but I think we should give thanks to the Lord since it is He who make us enlightened about His written Word.

Jesus was "born from a Woman, born under the Law…". Mary's descripttion here is very obvious. What needs to be explained as simple as possible is the second phrase. In the Extraordinary Form, the Gospel reading is the one-verse passage about the circumcision of Jesus eight days after His birth. This became the basis of the Church in celebrating Octaves. And in the Jewish tradition, male infants are circumcised and officially given a name. So the bottom line is that our Blessed Lord desired to be with us as the fulfillment of the Isaianic prophecy of the Emmanuel.

Our Lord came "…to redeem those who are under the Law." He did not only willed to redeem those who are under the Law--the Jews--but also those who are not even knowledgeable about it--the Gentiles. He willed to be with us to deliver us, even to the point of death.

"Mary kept all these words…in her heart." She was fully aware of the Child she bore in her womb and is now in her arms and in the arms of Joseph because the Angel Gabriel told her so. She was aware that her Son has a mission of saving the world from the clutches of evil. This means, the Christmas song "Mary, did you know?" has a heretical undertone.

And no matter how desolate this year has been to us, we still rejoice like the shepherds of Bethlehem; for we still are provided by God with countless benefits amidst the gloom of our sins and our grief.

We still rejoice in God because we will be facing another civil year. Another year of joy and suffering, of sorrow and glory.

And so we ask: As the year ends and another one begins, will I imitate Mary as she kept everything in her Immaculate Heart to ponder about the saving power of God? Will I be like the shepherds who praised Him whose Son is their Good Shepherd?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PRAYING THE COLLECT

O God, who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary hast bestowed upon mankind the rewards of everlasting sanctification: grant, we beseech Thee, that we may experience her intercession for us, through whom we have been made worthy to receive the Author of Life, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord,  Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end. Amen.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER

So, here are my last thoughts:

Instead of wishing and jumping around like party animals singing "Auld Lang Syne" like there is no tomorrow, it is better for us to get on our knees and pray, go to Mass, and even chant "Te Deum" when the clock strikes midnight. Instead of risking your life and limb on fireworks, better avoid lighting a firecracker at all. And finally, instead of doing superstitious crap, better think about the abounding graces of God and thank Him for all of them.

In behalf of my fellow Administrators from the 100% KATOLIKONG PINOY Online Ministry, I pray that the year that is to come be a great time for you to be closer to our God.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The God who became a Child: Reflection and insight on the Last Sunday of the Calendar Year

So how was your Christmas so far, everyone? I hope you are all fine out there as we continue to celebrate the Christmas Octave. (And as for those who don't know what an Octave is, it is the eight-day festivity following a great solemnity such as Christmas, Easter, and even Pentecost, just like the Jewish Hanukkah.)

This week is the final Sunday of the Calendar Year. In the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, we will commemorate the Feast of the Holy Family; while in the Extraordinary Form, we celebrate the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas. And as exposed in the Gospels of both Forms, we find Jesus, the omnipotent God Incarnate, as a helpless infant in the arms of Mary and in the custody of Joseph. Thiis is as far as He can go to know our miseries and deliver us from evil.

Without further ado, let's begin.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

READINGS AND PROPERS

Ordinary Form (Feast of the Holy Family, Year A)

First Reading:
Ecclus. 3:2-6, 12-14 (2-14)

God hath made the father honourable to the children: and seeking the judgment of the mothers, hath confirmed it upon the children. He that loveth God, shall obtain pardon for his sins by prayer, and shall refrain himself from them, and shall be heard in the prayer of days. And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up a treasure. He that honoureth his father shall have joy in his own children, and in the day of his prayer he shall be heard. He that honoureth his father shall enjoy a long life: and he that obeyeth the father, shall be a comfort to his mother.

(He that feareth the Lord, honoureth his parents, and will serve them as his masters that brought him into the world. Honour thy father, in work and word, and all patience, that a blessing may come upon thee from him, and his blessing may remain in the latter end. The father's blessing establisheth the houses of the children: but the mother's curse rooteth up the foundation. Glory not in the dishonour of thy father: for his shame is no glory to thee. For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father, and a father without honour is the disgrace of the son.)

Son, support the old age of thy father, and grieve him not in his life; And if his understanding fail, have patience with him, and despise him not when thou art in thy strength: for the relieving of the father shall not be forgotten. For good shall be repaid to thee for the sin of thy mother. And in justice thou shalt be built up, and in the day of affliction thou shalt be remembered: and thy sins shall melt away as the ice in the fair warm weather.

Responsorial:
Ps. 128:1-2, 3, 4-5
R: Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in His ways.

Blessed are all they that fear the Lord:
that walk in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labours of thy hands:
blessed art thou, and it shall be well with thee.

Thy wife as a fruitful vine,
on the sides of thy house.
Thy children as olive plants,
round about thy table.

Behold, thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.
May the Lord bless thee out of Sion:
and mayst thou see the good things of Jerusalem
all the days of thy life.

Second Reading:
Col. 3:12-21

Brethren: put ye on, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience: Bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if any have a complaint against another. Even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also. But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly: in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and be not bitter towards them. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to indignation, lest they be discouraged.

Gospel:
Mt. 2:13-15, 19-23 (13-23)

At that time: after the wise men departed, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph, saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and fly into Egypt: and be there until I shall tell thee. For it will come to pass that Herod will seek the child to destroy him. Who arose, and took the child and his mother by night, and retired into Egypt: and he was there until the death of Herod: That it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying: Out of Egypt have I called my son.

(Then Herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men, was exceeding angry: and sending killed all the menchildren that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: A voice in Rama was heard, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel bewailing her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.)

But when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in sleep to Joseph in Egypt, Saying: Arise, and take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel. For they are dead that sought the life of the child. Who arose, and took the child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. But hearing that Archclaus reigned in Judea in the room of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither: and being warned in sleep retired into the quarters of Galilee. And coming he dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was said by the prophets: That he shall be called a Nazarene.

Extraordinary Form (Sunday within the Octave of the Christmas)

INTROIT ¤ Wisdom 18. 14-15
V.: Gloria Patri . . . -- Dum medium silentium . . .
While all things were in quiet silence, and the night was in the midst of her course, Thine almighty Word, O Lord, leaped down from heaven from Thy royal throne. -- (Ps.92. 1). The Lord hath reigned, He is clothed with beauty: the Lord is clothed with strength, and hath girded Himself. V.: Glory be to the Father . . . -- While all things were in quiet silence . . .

COLLECT.--O almighty and everlasting God, direct our actions according to Thy good pleasure; that in the Name of Thy beloved Son we may deserve to abound in good works: Who with Thee liveth and reigneth in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

EPISTLE ¤ Gal. 4. 1-7
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Galatians.
[Now that the Son of God has emancipated us from the tutorship of the Old Law, we are no longer servants but sons of God.]
Brethren, as long as the heir is a child, he differeth nothing from a servant, though he be Lord of all: but is under tutors and governors until the time appointed by the father: so we also, when we were children, were serving under the elements of the world. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, that He might redeem them who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because you are sons, God hath sent the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying: Abba, Father. Therefore now he is not a servant, but a son; and if a son, an heir also through God.

GRADUAL ¤ Ps. 44. 3, 2
Speciosus forma prae filiis hominum: diffusa est gratia in labiis tuis. V.: Eructavit cor meum verbum bonum, dico ego opera mea Regi: lingua mea calamus scribae, velociter scribentis.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Dominus regnavit, decorem induit: induit Dominus fortitudinem et praecinxit se virtute. Alleluia.
Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in Thy lips. V.: My heart hath uttered a good word, I speak my words to the king: my tongue is the pen of a scrivener, that writeth swiftly.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: The Lord hath reigned, He is clothed with beauty: the Lord is clothed with strength, and hath girded Himself. Alleluia

GOSPEL ¤ Luke 2. 33-40.
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
[The evangelist tells us of the glorious mission which the future has in store for this Child of Bethlehem, the manifestation of which commences today in the Temple.]
At that time Joseph and Mary the mother of Jesus were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning Him. And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His Mother: Behold, this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel: and for a sign which shall be contradicted: and thine own soul a sword shall pierce, that out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed. And there was one Anna a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser; she was far advanced in years, and had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity. And she was a widow until fourscore and four years: who departed not from the temple, by fastings and prayers serving night and day. Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord: and spoke of Him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel. And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth. And the Child grew and waxed strong, full of wisdom: and the grace of God was in Him.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 92. 1, 2
Deus firmavit orbem terrae, qui non commovebitur: parata sedes tua, Deus, ex tunc, a saeculo tu es.
God hath establised the world, which shall not be moved: Thy throne, O God, is prepared from of old, Thou art from everlasting.

SECRET.--Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that the offering made in the sight of Thy Majesty may obtain for us the grace of loving devotion, and the reward of a blessed eternity. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

REFLECTIONS AND INSIGHTS

The readings and propers of this Sunday is all about the concept of what a family is and how it should be patterned after the Holy Family. God designed in the very beginning that man should "Go forth and multiply…" and to "fill the earth and subdue it" (Gen. 1:28). Furthermore, both Church and State recognizes the importance of the family as the most basic unit of society, and how integral they are in the salvation of souls and in the development of mankind, respectively.

In the history of salvation, it is in the family that man fell from grace through Adam; and in response, the Lord stripped off all of His glory and power to redeem mankind through the family: Both in His first miracle in the wedding of Cana (through the prompting of the Blessed Mother, of course) and, more importantly, in His Incarnation in the womb of Mary and in His life as her Son, under the custody of St. Joseph. The readings in the Ordinary Form are highlighting the role of parents and children in Sacred Scriptures and how it was fulfilled and substantiated in Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

On the other hand, in the Propers of the Extraordinary Form, this Sunday also emphasizes the continuing festivity of the Nativity of the Lord through narrating the Childhood of Christ, as proclaimed in the last part of the Gospel. Though the verse about Jesus advancing in age and wisdom is very brief, it says a lot about how He lived from the time He was found in the Temple until the beginning of His public ministry: under the mantle of Mary and under the protection of Joseph.

Jesus willed it to be a helpless child--to depend Himself to Mary, His handmaid, and to Joseph, the Head of the House of David--during the time that His life was in danger. I have inserted in the Ordinary Form Gospel the passage about the massacre of the Holy Innocents to highlight that only Jesus (and John the Baptist in ecclesiastical tradition) survived the massacre. Jesus was brought to Egypt to escape Herod; and Zecharias and Elizabeth hid John in the desert also to escape the same "baby-killer". (We have to remember that John was six months older than Jesus, and also falls under the "two-and-below" order.)

Now let's cut to the chase here: Jesus, the Lord of Hosts and the Eternal Son of the Eternal Father, became the very example of how children should be in the sight of their parents; the Lawgiver at Sinai Himself following the commandment He have promulgated through Moses: "Honour thy father and thy mother". We may not notice it, but Christmas should be Christ-centered (as the whole world ignores this concept), as well as it should also be family-centered; as the Nativity scene is focused not only on the Child in the manger, but also in the two closest figures near Him: Mary and Joseph--which the people of Israel considered as His parents. As long as the three of them are there, we can put the shepherds and the wise men aside (The angels cannot be discarded as they are spirits, and the Child is of divine origin--because the Child is their King!)

To compare it to how we Filipinos (and just as other people) celebrate Christmas today, we celebrate it in a partial manner without our focus on Christ's birth, only to be realized in full if we integrate and enthrone the Infant Lord in the middle of our celebrations and merry-making. So, it is much better if we celebrate Christmas as a family focusing on the Holy Family and what transpired two millenia ago in Bethlehem--that Christmas is a family celebration as long as it is centered on Christ.

It is not yet too late to realize this. We still have until January 1st to get into the true meaning of Christmas--that God emptied Himself to take our human flesh and reconcile us to His Father in heaven.

So this question is now raised: Do I fulfill my duty as a child to my parents? to Mary, our Mother? to Holy Mother Church? to our Father in heaven?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PRAYING THE COLLECT

O almighty and everlasting God, direct our actions according to Thy good pleasure; that in the Name of Thy beloved Son we may deserve to abound in good works. O Thou, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity, and so, in the joy of Thy house, delight one day in eternal rewards.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end. Amen.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER

The year is about to end! I really think that we should sing the Te Deum when the clock strikes midnight come New Year's Eve than hurt ourselves with firecrackers or make unruly noise. Besides, chanting the Te Deum is also making (holy) noise; and by doing this, you may gain a PLENARY INDULGENCE under the normal conditions (that [1] you have gone to confession and done the penance given by the priest, [2] prayed for the intention of the Holy Father, and [3] avoiding any sin, mortal or venial, or any occasion of sin upon reception of the indulgence).

Year-ender reflection will be out by December 31st, (hopefully) at 12:00 noon.

The Secular Christmas Monster

A good friend of mine, Mr. Anthony James "AJ" Perez from Filipinos for Life, have made a "guns blazing" first-hand experience on how the West poisoned our celebration of Christmas, or so we who are concerned on the degradation of Filipino culture think.

And I have to concur with him.

Original post here. Reposting with [comments]

-----------

Every year, especially during Christmas season, the traffic gets worse, the malls are more packed, and we are driven by this unquenchable thirst for more purchases and items to buy. [In short, CONSUMERISM. Trust me. The part about the traffic is absolutely true.]

I see something sinister behind all this. Something is out of place. [And I sense likewise.]

I am aware that this season is traditionally the season to give gifts to our family, friends, co-workers, and just about anyone. It is the season of giving - or at least it used to be. In our desire to give material gifts, are we spawning a monster feeding on our excessive consumerism? [Looks like we are. And that monster might be more dreadful than the Kraken.]

For example, people were all up in arms when it was declared that prices of electricity will be going up. That meant that prices of basic goods are soon to follow up as well. You think that would deter people from going to the mall? [Wait for it...] Today [this was posted December 25th], at the Mall of Asia, the crowd was so gargantuan you would think it was the feast of the Nazareno. What happened? I thought we were trying to save money because of the high prices of goods? [In short, all the rage was just a front for their personal ambitions.]

Why were there so many people at the malls this season? It's like we're all zombies out there, with no other choice, no idea of what fun is outside of the mall [Well, not me.]. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB, my mentor from way back [Mr. Perez was a Salesian ex-semnarian. WAS.], has this to say about this mall culture:
Malls are now the only leveler in society. There is no exclusion, but inclusion. At malls no one knows if one lives in a shack, as everyone has smartphones, same dresses, and the same disheveled hair look. In the mall, everyone can more or less have the same thing, provided you pay, of course. No membership dues. No monthly consumables ... just plain and simple fun defined according to the rituals of the cathedrals of commerce.
Are we slowly veering away from the true spirit of Christmas and turning towards a consumerist, politically-correct, no-nonsense, "happy holidays" kind of season? [Sadly, yes. And it just boils my blood.]

I have experienced the mad rush of Christmas shopping before. Several years back, it was different. It felt different. Back then, there was a spirit of rushing, a tone of necessity with the shopping. People want to get their shopping done so they could get back to the family ASAP and spend more time with them. The past few years, however, I have this feeling I cannot quite put my finger on. It's like we are slowly turning into mindless robots. Or animals. Animals driven by instinct to shop for more and more each year. [And the more the media shows this kind of "Christmas" as the norm, the more it would get worse.]

My feelings tell me that the more we participate in this consumerist culture, the more we miss out on Christmas itself; ironically, in our quest to buy more gifts, we are slowly forgetting that Christ's incarnation is one of the greatest gifts mankind has ever received. [I concur. Need I say more?]

I will not be surprised if we become like this a few years from now:

[...which though I fear would happen, I also hope it woudn't]

We Pinoys are proud that we have the happiest celebration of Christmas in all the world. That is going to change if we continue to feed this monster of consumerism. Call it cliche, but Christ really is the reason for the season [besides, the world owes Christ for all the celebration, but they just can't say it.], and the more we mindlessly buy things that will not make us happy, the more we are led away from the one true source of happiness itself.

-----------

Personally, I was drawn to this concept when I was a kid. But never again.

In the 17th to 18th century, some crackpot English Protestant exiles in America advocated the non-celebration of Christmas just because it is un-Biblical (just like the local cults say here) until they settled in the compromise that December 25th will be celebrated as a holiday of humanity. They call themselves the Puritans.

And in this compromise, though they lost the advocacy not to celebrate Christmas at all, they mounted a new strategy: to keep Christmas as distant to celebrating Christ's birth as possible.

America and Europe fell to that concept, so did Asia. And the Philippines will be next.

No thanks to the Puritans, we have relegated Christmas as a mere family gathering with no definite reason for the celebration.

Oh, I forgot. St. Nick has a Christmas gift:

Yes, my friends. The real Santa Claus gave a black eye to the guy who believed that Jesus is not God.

So what are we gonna do?

KILL THE MONSTER AT ALL COSTS!

The star of hope: The 2013 Christmas special

The day we all waited for has arrived: The Lord is born!

Now, we have to continue reflecting His birth by presenting to you the Readings and Propers of the Day Mass (the third and oldest of the three Masses celebrated every December 25th). Don't worry, we also link here the Readings and Propers of the Vigil Mass, the Midnight Mass and the Dawn Mass:

Sounds fair enough? I hope so….

Anyway, with the light of the recent catastrophes and anomalies that put our nation on its knees and the Church in full swing, we would like to have this reflection as solemn as possible without losing the candid thoughts (though lessened).

READINGS AND PROPERS

Ordinary Form (PROPER)

First Reading: Is. 52:7-10
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, and that preacheth peace: of him that sheweth forth good, that preacheth salvation, that saith to Sion: Thy God shall reign! The voice of thy watchmen: they have lifted up their voice, they shall praise together: for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall convert Sion. Rejoice, and give praise together, O ye deserts of Jerusalem: for the Lord hath comforted his people: he hath redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord hath prepared his holy arm in the sight of all the Gentiles: and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

Responsorial: Ps. 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God.

Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle:
because he hath done wonderful things.
His right hand hath wrought for him salvation,
and his arm is holy.

The Lord hath made known his salvation:
he hath revealed his justice in the sight of the Gentiles.
He hath remembered his mercy
and his truth toward the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Sing joyfully to God, all the earth;
make melody, rejoice and sing.

Sing praise to the Lord on the harp,
on the harp, and with the voice of a psalm:
With long trumpets, and sound of cornet.
Make a joyful noise before the Lord our king.

Second Reading: Heb. 1:1-6
God, who, at sundry times and in divers manners, spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, last of all, In these days, hath spoken to us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world. Who being the brightness of his glory and the figure of his substance and upholding all things by the word of his power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high: Being made so much better than the angels as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels hath he said at any time: Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee? And again: I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith: And let all the angels of God adore him.

Gospel: Jn. 1:1-18
In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him: and without him was made nothing that was made.
In him was life: and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness: and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
This man came for a witness, to give testimony of the light, that all men might believe through him.
He was not the light, but was to give testimony of the light.
That was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.
He was in the world: and the world was made by him: and the world knew him not.
He came unto his own: and his own received him not.
But as many as received him, he gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in his name.
Who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
[genuflect] And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth.
John beareth witness of him and crieth out, saying: This was he of whom I spoke: He that shall come after me is preferred before me: because he was before me.
And of his fulness we all have received: and grace for grace.
For the law was given by Moses: grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
No man hath seen God at any time: the only begotten Son who is in the Bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

A child is born to us, and a Son is given to us: Whose government is upon His shoulder: and His Name shall be called, the Angel of Great Counsel. -- (Ps.97. 1). EPISTLE ¤ Hebrews 1. 1-12
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews.
[It was by the Word that God made the world. Let the nations and kings come and adore Him. -- The Angels fall down and worship Him.]
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets, whom He hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also He made the world: Who being the brightness of His glory and the figure of His substance, and upholding all things by the word of His power, making purgation of sins, sitteth on the right hand of the Majesty on high: being made so much better than the angels as He hath inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels hath He said at any time: Thou art my Son, today have I begotten Thee? And again: I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son? And again, when He bringeth in the first begotten into the world, He saith: He that maketh His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire. But to the Son: Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of Thy kingdom. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity: therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows. And: Thou in the beginning, O Lord, didst found the earth: and the works of Thy hands are the heavens. They shall perish, but Thou shalt continue: and they shall all grow old as a garment: and as a vesture shalt Thou change them and they shall be changed: but Thou art the selfsame, and Thy years shall not fail.

Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Dies sanctificatus illuxit nobis: venite gentes, et adorate Dominum: quia hodie descendit lux magna super terram.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God: sing joyfully to God, all the earth. V.: The Lord hath made known His salvation: He hath revealed His justice in the sight of the Gentiles.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: A sanctified day has shone upon us: come ye Gentiles and adore the Lord: for this day a great light hath descended upon the earth. Alleluia

GOSPEL ¤ John 1. 1-14
† Beginning of the holy Gospel according to St. John.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was in God's presence, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him was made nothing that was made: in Him was life, and the life was the Light of men; and the Light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to testify concerning the Light, that all might believe through Him. He was not the Light, but he was to testify concerning the Light. That was the true Light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world.
He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him to them He gave power to become sons of God, to them that believe in His Name, who are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [Here all kneel.]
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us: and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 88. 12, 15
Tui sunt coeli, et tua est terra, orbem terrarum et plenitudinum ejus tu fundasti: justitia et judicium praeparatio sedis tuae.
Thine are the heavens, and Thine is the earth, the world and the fulness thereof Thou hast founded: justice and judgment are the preparation of Thy throne.

SECRET.--Sanctify, O Lord, the gifts offered to Thee, by the new birth of Thine Only-begotten Son: and cleanse us from the stains of our sins. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

PREFACE
Preface of the Nativity
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God, for through the Mystery of the Word made flesh, the new light of Thy glory hath shone upon the eyes of our mind, so that while we acknowledge God in visible form, we may through Him be drawn to the love of things invisible. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Throne and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:

At the end of the Mass, the Last Gospel is not read as usual. Instead, Matthew 2. 1-2 is read.

LAST GOSPEL for Christmas Day Mass: Mt. 2. 1-2

When Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, Saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him.

REFLECTIONS AND INSIGHTS

"All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God".

Apart from the highlight passage of the Gospel of St. John, we also see that this passage from the 98th Psalm (or the 97th in other versions of the Bible) is something we should ask ourselves: Indeed, we have seen the salvation of our God, but in what way can we substantiate this?

We have seen in the Epistle to the Hebrews (allegedly by St. Paul, but this Is disputed) that the salvation sent by God to us is His own Son, Jesus Christ. He is of divine origin as He was "born of the Father before all ages" and "for us men and for our salvation, He came down from heaven; and by the Holy Ghost, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man." (Nicene Creed).

The Holy Spirit has perfectly weaved Sacred Scriptures to made manifest the prophecies of the Messiah and the fulfillment that is found in Jesus Christ. We would take three blog posts just to specify each one of them, but I would like to simplify the message of Christmas into the three Theological Virtues: faith, hope, and charity.

Charity is the greatest of the three, as St. Paul exhorted in the 13th chapter of his First Letter to the Corinthians. Charity, which is the synonym of love, means committing one's self to the other even if it harms himself in the process. Secular as it sounds, but it is deeply rooted to the divine truth that "God is charity" as He Himself was made manifest in the world through His Incarnation, Passion, death, and Resurrection.

Being the first among the three to be made manifest upon our baptism, faith is also important as the door in which charity will flow into the hearts of all men. Yes, it is difficult to keep the faith, but these tests of faith strengthen us. And we persevere because we fix our eyes on the Crucified. But there would still be things that we cannot get over by faith alone, even if combined with charity.

What is faith if we live in despair? What is charity if it is too superficial?

The heart needs more than just faith and charity. The world is in need of hope.

These three are interconnected. Hope and charity without faith is futile; faith and hope without charity is selfish; faith and charity without hope is worthless.

Hope is the one virtue that Christmas is deeply rooted on. Just imagine: Jesus was born in an era of peace that was established by Rome; but in Judea, it is far from peace. The Jewish priests and levites of the Maccabean dynasty were overthrown form power and the Roman-backed Herodian dynasty snatched the power that began from the bravery of the sons of Mattathias against the Greek pagans a hundred-or-so years back. Israel was ridiculed for the longest time, that it even extends until today. Though it appeared to be a holy nation, moral corruption decayed Israel, that the only people faithful to the Lord was reduced to a very few, mostly those who are insignificant in all levels of Israel's society. These people, mostly the masses, painstakingly await the coming of the Messiah, and indeed Christ came as the Messiah, the Suffering Servant, the Son of Man.

But where is the hope there, you ask?

Isn't it obvious? He became a child for you and me. And in every child born, there is a hope for a better future, though there are many false hopes propagated all around the world.

Case and point: secularism.

Ever since political thoughts such as socialism and capitalism came around in the 1920s, the world started to destroy itself. As the fog of war clears, many people create too much noise that we are now living in a confused global neighborhood reduced to nothing more than profit, loss, and opportunity. Man became ignorant of his true dignity, even if most people feed them with ideals that allegedly augments it, but in reality, it just make them fall into a deeper pit of despair.

Secularism has also dampened our religious freedom as Christians. Heck, even Christmas has been secularized as a by-product of secularism. No thanks to the Puritans.

Now let's add another situation that is familiar recently: The Visayan Double Whammy.

If America and Europe were devastated by such catastrophes, they may either be too desparate that they will be susceptible to commit suicide due to a nervous breakdown, or they may recover from the earthquake or the storm but at the price of bitterness that may lead to atheism, and eventually to desparation.

All over the world, there are broken souls that need to be rescued form their sins and that need integral human help. The Catholic Church became the beacon of hope in a world of calamities, war, corruption, and despair. Since she was founded by Christ upon Peter, Holy Mother Church made a great effort to lead men to her Bridegroom, just like the star that shined for the shepherds, the Magi, and the angels.

Jesus is the Light in which the star of hope points to. He is the Good Shepherd of the shepherds of Bethlehem; the Divine Wisdom seen by the Wise Men; the King of the angels; and the Lord of all creation--that is, of the oxen, the donkeys, and the sheep that attended Him in His sleep as a child. Although this star is no longer shining in human history, the Light of the world still makes Himself known to everyone as the Source of their hope. And the Church, His Bride, became the star that leads all men to the manger--to the Word made flesh.

"All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God." Yes. "For unto us a Child is born…the Prince of Peace" (Is. 9:6) who is our Emmanuel (Is. 7:14; Mt. 1:23), who is the Word of God made flesh that dwelt among us (cf. Jn. 1:14), who emptied Himself to take the form of a slave and to be obedient unto the death in the cross (cf. Phil. 2:7-8).

This is who Jesus Christ is for us, my dear friends. The Source of our hope.

Now we ask: How can I live out the hope that is within me? Will I be like the Virgin Mary, "our life, our sweetness, and our hope" as she shares the hopes of the Divine and His plan to save mankind?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PRAYING THE COLLECT

Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God, that the new birth of Thine only-begotten Son in the flesh may set us free, who are held by the old bondage under the yoke of sin. O God, who wonderfully created the dignity of human nature and still more wonderfully restored it, grant, we pray, that we may share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity.

Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end. Amen.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

From the bottom of my heart, allow me to greet you all a Merry Christmas!
