He calls, we respond: Reflections and insights on the Third Sunday after the Epiphany

The title of this reflection seems to be the common theme of both Forms of the Mass this week, and that, I think, is what I would like to share.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

READINGS AND PROPERS

Extraordinary Form (Third Sunday after the Epiphany)

INTROIT ¤ Ps. 96. 7, 8
Adorate Deum, omnes Angeli ejus: audivit et laetata est Sion: et exsultaverunt filiae Judae. -- Dominus regnavit, exsultet terra: laetentur insulae multae. V.: Gloria Patri . . . -- Adorate Deum, omnes Angeli ejus . . .
Adore God, all you His Angels: Sion heard, and was glad: and the daughters of Juda rejoiced. -- (Ps.96. 1). The Lord hath reigned, let the earth rejoice: let many islands be glad. V.: Glory be to the Father . . . -- Adore God, all you His Angels . . .

COLLECT.--O almighty and everlasting God, look mercifully upon our weakness: and stretch forth the right hand of Thy Majesty to protect us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

EPISTLE ¤ Rom. 12. 16-21
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Romans
[Let us make acts of faith in the divinity of Jesus, that we may enter His Kingdom; let us by our charity help all men.]
Brethren, Be not wise in your own conceits. To no man rendering evil for evil: providing good things not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as is in you, have peace with all men. Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved, but give place unto wrath. For it is written: Revenge is mine: I will repay, saith the Lord. But if thine enemy be hungry, give him to eat; if he thirst, give him to drink: for doing his, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good.

GRADUAL ¤ Ps. 101. 16-17
Timebunt gentes nomen tuum, Domine, et omnes reges terrae gloriam tuum V.: Quoniam aedificavit Dominus Sion: et videbitur in majestate sua.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Dominus regnavit, exsultet terra: laetentur insulae multae. Alleluia.
The Gentiles shall fear Thy Name, O Lord, and all the kings of the earth Thy glory. V.: For the Lord hath built up Sion: and He shall be seen in His glory.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: The Lord hath reigned, let the earth rejoice, let many islands be glad. Alleluia.

GOSPEL ¤ Matth. 8. 1-13.
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.
[Two miracles of Jesus: A word of Our Lord will cleanse the leper, whose cure will be officially verified by the priests "to serve for a testimony of the divinity of the Christ"; -- a heathen, the Roman centurion, obtains by his confidence a great miracle; he testifies with humility that Christ is God. The Church puts daily into our mouths at Mass the humble words he used.]
At that time, when Jesus was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him: and behold a leper came and adored Him, saing: Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, stretching forth His hand, touched him, saying: I will. Be thou made clean. And forthwith his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith to him: See, thou tell no man: but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. And when he had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching Him, and saying: Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grievously tormented. And Jesus saith to him: I will come and heal him. And the centurion making answer said: Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this: Go, and he goeth; and to another; Come, and he cometh; and to my servant: Do this, and he doeth it. And Jesus hearing this marvelled, and said to them that followed Him: Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel. And I say to you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom in heaven: but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said to the centurion: Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee. And the servant was healed at the same hour.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 117. 16, 17
Dextera Domini fecit virtutem: dextera Domini exaltavit me: non moriar, sed vivam, et narrabo opera Domini.
The right hand of the Lord hath wrought strength: the right hand of the Lord hath exalted me: I shall not die, but live, and shall declare the works of the Lord.

SECRET.--May these offerings, we beseech Thee, O Lord, cleanse us from our sins, and sanctify the bodies and minds of Thy servants for the celebration of this Sacrifice. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

PREFACE
Preface of the Most Holy Trinity
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

COMMUNION ¤ Luke 5. 22
Mirabantur omnes de his quae procedebant de ore Dei.
All wondered at these things which proceeded from the mouth of God.

POSTCOMMUNION.--Vouchsafe, O Lord, we beseech Thee, to make us, who of Thy bounty frequent such great mysteries, truly disposed to obtain the benefits of the same. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

Ordinary Form (Third Sunday in Ordinary Time)

Prophecy: Is. 8:23-9:3
At the first time the land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephtali was lightly touched: and at the last the way of the sea beyond the Jordan of the Galilee of the Gentiles was heavily loaded. The people that walked in darkness, have seen a great light: to them that dwelt in the region of the shadow of death, light is risen. Thou hast multiplied the nation, and hast not increased the joy. They shall rejoice before thee, as they that rejoice in the harvest, as conquerors rejoice after taking a prey, when they divide the spoils. For the yoke of their burden, and the rod of their shoulder, and the sceptre of their oppressor thou hast overcome, as in the day of Madian.

Responsorial: Ps. 27: 1, 4, 13-14
R: The Lord is my light and my salvation.

The Lord is my light and my salvation,
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the protector of my life:
of whom shall I be afraid?

One thing I have asked of the Lord,
this will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life.
That I may see the delight of the Lord,
and may visit his temple.

I believe to see the good things of the Lord
in the land of the living.
Expect the Lord, do manfully,
and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord.

Epistle: I Cor. 1:10-13, 17 (10-17)
I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no schisms among you: but that you be perfect in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been signified unto me, my brethren, of you, by them that are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith: I indeed am of Paul; and I am of Apollo; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul then crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

(I give God thanks, that I baptized none of you but Crispus and Caius: Lest any should say that you were baptized in my name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanus. Besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.)

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not in wisdom of speech, lest the cross of Christ should be made void.

Gospel: Mt. 4:12-23
At that time: When Jesus had heard that John was delivered up, he retired into Galilee: And leaving the city Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capharnaum on the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and of Nephthalim; That it might be fulfilled which was said by Isaias the prophet:

"Land of Zabulon and land of Nephthalim, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: The people that sat in darkness, hath seen great light: and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death, light is sprung up."

From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea (for they were fishers). And he saith to them: Come ye after me, and I will make you to be fishers of men. And they immediately leaving their nets, followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets: and he called them. And they forthwith left their nets and father, and followed him. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom: and healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity, among the people.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

REFLECTIONS AND INSIGHTS

The readings of the Ordinary Form teaches us the proclamation of the Kingdom of God as a fulfilment of the Prophecy of Isaias that "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light"--that the "light" in the prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus, the Light of the world. He has manifested Himself by preaching to the multitudes: "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand…. Come, follow Me." In response, men are called to "leave their nets," follow Jesus, and "seek to dwell in the house of the Lord"--the abode of Christ from the beginning of time.

On the other hand, the Old Rite tackled on the miracles that our Lord made, specifically to the leper and to the centurion's servant. We have to note that these two individuals are considered Gentiles and scums of the Jewish society (and we have to look at Jesus as a radical Jew), and yet, the Gospel is preached to them--in the form of healing: Thus, the admonition of St. Paul to "overcome evil by doing good." This admonition should be our response to the Lord's call to charity.

The bottom line of these two reflections is that we must overcome evil by doing good as Jesus healed the sick and preached the Gospel to many. We are called to "see the great light" Who said "the kingdom of God is at hand."

And what should be our response?

It should be what the sons of Jonah and the sons of Zebedee did--leaving their nets and their households to follow the Lord in holiness. We should leave behind our old selves and find new life in the Lord: a life of humility, zeal, and holiness. We can achieve this by regularly going to confession and to receive our Lord in Holy Communion with great regard to the words: "Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum; sed tantum dic verbo, et sanabitur anima mea." "Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst enter under my roof; but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed." It might also be a good suggestion to recite the words of the Psalm before receiving Him: "One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life." (27:4)

And so we ask ourselves: Do we choose to be brave by proclaiming the kingdom of God through following our Lord's life of humility of service? Are we brave enough to declare "Domine, non sum dignus…" just as we are brave to say "Fiat mihi…" and "Fiat voluntas Tua"?

PRAYING THE COLLECT

O almighty and everlasting God, look mercifully upon our weakness: and stretch forth the right hand of Thy Majesty to protect us. Direct our actions according to Thy good pleasure, that in the name of Thine beloved Son we may abound in good works.

POSTSCRIPT

Watch out for a special entry before Monday begins!

Fighting evil like a child: A retrospect on the Second Sunday after the Epiphany

Greetings to those who have just celebrated the Feast of the Santo Niño in Cebu, in Bacolod, in Tondo, in Pandacan, in Ternate, Cavite, and in every place where the Holy Child is being adored! I hope you had a faith-filled observance of the feast!

We are somehow blest by the Holy See to celebrate the holy childhood of our Lord by giving us a Papal Indult to celebrate the feast every Third Sunday of January, in both Forms of the Holy Mass. We have a peculiar set of propers for the feast of the Santo Niño in the Ordinary Form, and we have also celebrated a Votive Mass of the Most Holy Name of Jesus in the Extraordinary (both featured below). I'll make this short and sweet since I have yet to do the reflections for this coming Sunday, as well as a special entry, which I hope I will make by tonight.

Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles.
[This Name means Savior, "for there is no other name given to men whereby we must be saved."]
In those days, Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them: Ye princes of the people and ancients, hear: if we this day are examined concerning the good deed done to the infirm man by what means he hath been made whole, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel: that by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom your crucified, whom God hath raised from the dead, even by Him this man standeth here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by you the builders, which is become the head of the corner: neither is there salvation in any other. For there is no other name under heaven given to men, whereby we must be saved.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 85. 12, 5

I will praise Thee, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify Thy Name for ever: for Thou, O Lord, art sweet and mild: and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon Thee, alleluia.

SECRET.--May Thy blessing, O most merciful God, by which every creature lives, sanctify, we beseech Thee, this our Sacrifice, which we offer unto Thee to the glory of the Name of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that it may be well-pleasing to Thy Majesty for Thy praise, and profit us unto salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One god, world without end.

PREFACE
Preface of the Nativity
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God, for through the Mystery of the Word made flesh, the new light of Thy glory hath shone upon the eyes of our mind, so that while we acknowledge God in visible form, we may through Him be drawn to the love of things invisible. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Throne and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:

COMMUNION ¤ Ps. 85. 9, 10
Omnes gentes quascumque fecisti, venient, et adorabunt coram te, Domine, et glorificabunt nomen tuum: quoniam magnus es tu, et faciens mirabilia: tu es Deus solus. Alleluia.
All the nations Thou hast made shall come and adore before Thee, O Lord, and they shall glorify Thy Name: for Thou art great, and dost wonderful things: Thou art God alone.

POSTCOMMUNION.--O almighty and everlasting God, who didst create and redeem us, look graciously upon our prayer, and with a favorable and benign countenance deign to accept the Sacrifice of the saving Victim which we have offered to Thy Majesty in honor of the Name of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ: that through the infusion of Thy grace we may rejoice that our names are written in heaven, under the glorious Name of Jesus, the pledge of eternal predestination. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

Ordinary Form (Indulted Feast of the Holy Child in the Philippines)

Prophecy: Is. 9:2-7
For every violent taking of spoils, with tumult, and garment mingled with blood, shall be burnt, and be fuel for the fire. For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace. His empire shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace: he shall sit upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom; to establish it and strengthen it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth and for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Responsorial: Ps. 97: 1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6
R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God

Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle:
because he hath done wonderful things.
His right hand hath wrought for him salvation,
and his arm is holy.

The Lord hath made known his salvation:
he hath revealed his justice in the sight of the Gentiles.
He hath remembered his mercy and his truth
toward the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
Sing joyfully to God, all the earth;
make melody, rejoice and sing.

Sing praise to the Lord on the harp,
on the harp, and with the voice of a psalm:
With long trumpets, and sound of cornet.
Make a joyful noise before the Lord our king.

Epistle: Eph. 1: 3-6, 15-18 (3-18)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ: As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity. Who hath predestinated us unto the adoption of children through Jesus Christ unto himself: according to the purpose of his will: Unto the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he hath graced us, in his beloved son.

(In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his, grace, Which hath superabounded in us, in all wisdom and prudence, That he might make known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he hath purposed in him, In the dispensation of the fulness of times, to re-establish all things in Christ, that are in heaven and on earth, in him. In whom we also are called by lot, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things according to the counsel of his will. That we may be unto the praise of his glory: we who before hoped in Christ: In whom you also, after you had heard the word of truth (the gospel of your salvation), in whom also believing, you were signed with the holy Spirit of promise. Who is the pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of acquisition, unto the praise of his glory.)

Wherefore, I also, hearing of your faith that is in the Lord Jesus and of your love towards all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making commemoration of you in my prayers, That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation, in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your heart enlightened that you may know what the hope is of his calling and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.

Gospel: Mt. 18:1-5, 10 (1-10)
At that time: the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Who, thinkest thou, is the greater in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus, calling unto him a little child, set him in the midst of them. And said: amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.

(And he that shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me. But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of scandals. For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh. And if thy hand, or thy foot, scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee having one eye to enter into life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.)

See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

RETROSPECT

There are two things that distinguish us Filipinos from the rest of the world, as far as I am concerned: Our use of "po" to people of authority and our fondness to children that even the Church highly commends so. But before we go to that, I would say that this week has been a turbulent one when it comes to our fight to preserve the Judeo-Christian influence of our public morals, or what seems to be left of it.

The Monday after the Feast of the Holy Child and the memorial of His Most Holy Name, the "National Day of Prayer" was organized by the Philippine government as thanksgiving to the year that was and as a plea to preserve our nation from further tempests and wars.

I have two comments on this: Why? and why only now?

I seem to be more than aghast (maybe even ragingly furious) that the government had the nerve to call such an event. They seem to be forgetting that they have no right to do this since they have infringed more than once the Constitutional principle of the "separation of Church and State" by consenting the passage of the Reproductive Health Law, even if the Supreme Court has given it a temporary restraining order. Not to mention that its passage was through the direct or indirect involvement of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF)--more known as the Pork Barrel--which the same High Tribunal mandated as unconstitutional.

Now, let's take the above concept out and ask the question "Why only now?"

We understand that they have been working hard (or so they think...) in the recovery, rehabilitation, and restoration of the lives devastated by the crises and calamities that struck our brethren in Central and Southern Philippines. But it is NEVER an excuse to have this call to prayer only now just because a lot of things happened. They should have at least done this during Christmas, or better yet, let the NGOs and religious groups do this independently.

After the National Day of Prayer, the next four days were even worse.

The Philippines was host to the 7th Asia-Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Rights. I think you would agree with me if I say that this is a direct insult to our Lord, especially that the Feast of the Holy Child was celebrated the Sunday before. It was Pro-Life Philippines who stood against these wretched men and women, and I commend them for keeping vigil for the past few days at the PICC. However, there might only be a handful of priests who led them to prayer--maybe there were none--and this is my disappointment. I fear that if this continues, the laity would be given full credit, and our priests and bishops would be misconceptualized again.

But, let us also focus on what was read and preached to us last Sunday:

Jesus, the Child of Nazareth, has told the Apostles in the Gospel of the Ordinary Form that whoever possesses the spiritual qualities of a child shall be the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. And it is He who became the greatest example of such. After all, the Holy Name of Jesus can be synonymous to holiness, obedience, and childlikeness.

And there is a passage in that same Gospel which was not used in the Liturgy of the Word: a warning to those who would harm the children of God.

"He that shall receive one such little child in My name, receiveth Me. But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in Me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of scandals. For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh(Mt. 18:5-7).

Now you know what would happen to those who scandalize the Church by any means. And what's worse: it can be you or me. So prayers, a regular reception of the Sacrament of Penance, and a worthy disposition when receiving the Lord who became a little Child at Holy Communion is recommended.

So the bottom line of this retrospect is that if we would like to imitate our Lord, we should be like children by being obedient to His will and to the magisterium of His Church; and by fighting His cause--the salvation of souls--in a childlike manner.

Now let us ask ourselves: Are we committed to become childlike in very small ways just like our Lord who subjected Himself to Mary and Joseph while a Child in Nazareth?

PRAYING THE COLLECT

(Note: this is the Collect of the Votive Mass of the Most Holy Name)

O God, Who didst constitute Thine only-begotten Son the Savior of Mankind, and didst bid Him to be called Jesus: mercifully grant, that we who venerate His holy Name on earth, may fully enjoy also the vision of Him in heaven. Through the same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end. Amen.

POSTSCRIPT

And since we are in the fight for the culture of life in our nation and we are fond of dressing our personal images of the Holy Child, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I am envisioning the devotion to our Lord and our Lady in my picturesque imagination as conquerors.

Jesus, depicted as a teenager in princely robes, is wielding a sabre on His right hand and holding the reins of His white horse on His left. He is being flanked by St. Peter on His right, wearing papal robes, and a winged St. Michael on His left, wielding a fiery sword on his right hand and holding a battle standard on his left. Behind the three are hundreds of millions of men, horses, and angels marching and galloping in order. At the center of the formation, I depict Mary as a queen riding a three-horsed chariot with St. Joseph as her consort and a winged St. Gabriel as her charioteer. Her arms are stretched open, and pointing to her Son, seemingly commanding the troops to follow His lead as she did. If ever I would have a title for the Blessed Virgin in this depiction, I will call her "Nuestra Señora del Ejercito Celestial" or "Our Lady of the Heavenly Hosts", since her Son is the Lord of Hosts.

I just hope someone would tell me "Sige. Push mo 'yan!"

A sense of mission: Reflections and insights on the First Sunday after the Epiphany

The readings and propers of this Sunday is all about Jesus and His mission to make His Father's glory known. This, too, we share through the sharing of His priestly, prophetic, and kingly mission from the time we are baptized.

Anyway, here is this week's Biblical fix:

READINGS AND PROPERS

Extraordinary Form (Feast of the Holy Family)

The special devotion which proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of virtue of all Christian households began in the XVIIth century. It started almost simultaneously in Canada and France. -- The Association of the Holy Family being founded in Montreal in 1663, and the Daughters of the Holy Family in Paris in 1674. Numerous other congregations and associations under the Patronage of the Holy Family have been established, since that time, and they are spread over the world. The Archconfraternity was established by Pius IX in 1847. In 1893 Leo XIII approved a feast for Canada, and Pope Benedict XV extended the Feast of the Holy Family to the whole Church and ordered its celebration to be kept on the Sunday after the Epiphany.
INTROIT ¤ Prov. 23, 24, 25.

Amen. -- Exsultat gaudio pater Iusti, gaudeat Pater tuus et Mater tua, et exsultet quae genuit te.
The father of the Just rejoiceth greatly, let Thy father and Thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice who bore Thee. -- (Ps. 88. 2, 3). How lovely are Thy tabernacles, O Lord of Hosts! My soul longeth and fainteth for the courts of the Lord. V.: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. -- The father of the Just rejoiceth greatly, let Thy father and Thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice who bore Thee.
COLLECT

Domine Iesu Christe, qui Mariae et Ioseph subditus, domesticam vitam ineffabilibus virtutibus consecrasti: fac nos, utriusque auxilio, Familiae sanctae tuae exemplis instrui; et consortium consequi sempiternum: Qui vivis et regnas cum Deo Patri in unitate Spiritus Sancti Deus, per omnia saecula saeculorum.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who, being subject to Mary and Joseph, didst sanctify home life with unspeakable virtues: grant, that, by the aid of both, we may be taught by the example of Thy Holy Family, and attain to eternal fellowship with it: Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
EPISTLE ¤ Col. 3. 12-17
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to the Colossians.
Lectio Epistolae beati Pauli Apostoli ad Colossenses.
["All whatsoever you do in word or work, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by Jesus Christ our Lord." . . . says St. Paul to the Colossians and to the Church.]

Brethren, Put ye on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, the bowels of mercy, benignity, humility, modesty, patience: bearing with one another and forgiving one another: even as the Lord hath forgiven you, so do you also. But above all these things have charity, which is the bond of perfection: and let the peace of Christ rejoice in your hearts, wherein also you are called in one body: and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God. All whatsoever you do in word or in work, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father by Jesus Christ our Lord.
GRADUAL ¤ Ps. 16. 4.

Unam petii a Domino, hanc requiram: ut inhabitem in domo Domini omnibus diebus vitae meae. V.: Beati qui habitant in domo tua, Domine, in saecula saeculorum laudabunt te.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Vere tu es Rex absconditus, Deus Israel Salvator. Alleluia.
One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. V. (Ps. 88. 5). Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house, O Lord, they shall praise Thee for ever and ever.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Isaias 45. 15) Verily Thou art a hidden King, the God of Israel, the Savior. Alleluia.
GOSPEL ¤ Luke 2. 42-52
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
† Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam.
[The Divine Child Jesus sits in the midst of the doctors who are astonished at His wisdom and His answers. Humility of Jesus. Greatness of Jesus in the Temple and His submission to Mary and Joseph.]

When Jesus was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast, and having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the Child Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and His parents knew it not. And thinking that He was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought Him among their kinsfolk and acquaintences. And not finding Him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking Him. And it came to pass that after three days they found Him in the Temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard Him were astonished at His wisdom and His answers. And seeing Him they wondered. And His Mother said to Him: Son, why hast Thou done so to us? Behold Thy father and I have sought Thee sorrowing. And He said to them: how is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business? And they understood not the word that He spoke unto them. And he went down with them and come to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And His Mother kept all these words in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace with God and men.

Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.

Ordinary Form (Feast of the Baptism of the Lord)

Prophecy: Is. 42:1-4, 6-7 (1-7)
Thus saith the Lord: Behold my servant, I will uphold him: my elect, my soul delighteth in him: I have given my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor have respect to person, neither shall his voice be heard abroad. The bruised reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench, he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. He shall not be sad, nor troublesome, till he set judgment in the earth, and the islands shall wait for his law.

(Thus saith the Lord God that created the heavens, and stretched them out: that established the earth, and the things that spring out of it: that giveth breath to the people upon it, and spirit to them that tread thereon.)

I the Lord have called thee in justice, and taken thee by the hand, and preserved thee. And I have given thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles: That thou mightest open the eyes of the blind, and bring forth the prisoner out of prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Responsorial: Ps. 29: 1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10

R: The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Bring to the Lord, O ye children of God:
bring to the Lord the offspring of rams.
Bring to the Lord glory and honour:
bring to the Lord glory to his name:
adore ye the Lord in his holy court.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
The Lord is upon many waters.
The voice of the Lord is in power;
the voice of the Lord in magnificence.

The God of majesty hath thundered.
And in his temple all shall speak his glory.
The Lord maketh the flood to dwell:
and the Lord shall sit king for ever.

Epistle: Acts 10:34-38
In those days: Peter opening his mouth, said: in very deed I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons. But in every nation, he that feareth him and worketh justice is acceptable to him. God sent the word to the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all). You know the word which hath been published through all Judea: for it began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached. Jesus of Nazareth: how God anointed him with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Gospel: Mt. 3:13-17
At that time: Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him. But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfil all justice. Then he suffered him. And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him. And behold a voice from heaven saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

REFLECTIONS AND INSIGHTS

This Sunday, we celebrate two feasts, if not three. In the Ordinary Form, we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord; whilst in the Extraordinary Form, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family, if not the External Solemnity of the Epiphany (which is celebrated in January 6th in the old liturgical calendar no matter what day of the week it is, since it is the twelfth day of Christmas) with the commemoration of the Feast of the Holy Family (using its Collect, its Secret, and its Postcommunion).

In the Old Rite, the propers reflect the continuing story of Christmas through the childhood of Jesus. In fact, if Easter has its fifty days (from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday), Christmas has its forty--from Christmas Day to February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord and the Purification of Mary. In the Novus Ordo, The readings are more of the beginning of the public ministry of the Son of God, when His Father in heaven sent down Their Spirit (the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son is one and the same Third Person of the Holy Trinity--remember that!).

Since Advent, we have noticed that the First Reading is always taken form the Prophecy of Isaias, and the only time this is repeated is during Lent and Holy Week. The Isaianic prophecy is so Messianic in nature that it stands above the prophecies of Jeremias, Ezechiel, Daniel, and the other prophecies that comprised the second half of the Old Testament. It might be also realized that through the Holy Spirit and through the wisdom of the Church, the prophecy of Isaias takes a place of precedence over all the other prophecies that followed it in the canon of the Scriptures.

One of the passages which makes the Prophecy of Isaias a cut above the rest is the one read today. "Behold My servant," says the Lord. And we clearly see that this servant is no other than His own Son, Jesus Christ. If we also include verse 8  of the 42nd chapter, in addition to verse 5 which is omitted in the Liturgy of the Word (but can be seen in this reflection parenthesized and italicized), we can see that it is Jesus who is being referred here: "I the Lord, this is my name: I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to graven things." If we look closer, we might ask: "Who is this servant?" For sure, Isaias is out of the choices since he is the visionary, and God is very wise and omniscient that He has not addressed this statement to Isaias, that Isaias is not the one whom He is speaking to.

So the question now is: "To whom, then?"

And our Catholic faith understands that the answer is very obvious: To the Messiah--to Jesus Christ, the God made man.

This only means that the plan for salvation is really "up close and personal" from the very beginning. Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, made a tremendous act of mediating between God and man. He, being God, has redeemed us from our sinful misery. But His wisdom is so infinite the He left behind a Church to tell to the world that He have to die on a cross just to make us worthy to be called children of God. And in the Gospel of the Ordinary Form, we hear the voice of the Father and the manifestation of the Holy Spirit anointing Jesus: "This is My beloved Son." Extensively, the first chapter of the Epistle to the Hebrews is all about the divinity of Christ and how he is very well pleased in the eyes of His Father:

"For to which of the angels hath he said at any time: 'Thou art my Son, to-day have I begotten thee'? And again: 'I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son'? And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith: 'And let all the angels of God adore him'.

"And to the angels indeed he saith: 'He that maketh his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire'. But to the Son: 'Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom.'"

(Heb. 1:5-8, emphasis supplied)

See how this pastiche of words from the Old Testament fit perfectly to Jesus.

To summarize the story of the Baptism, it is the first clear manifestation of the Holy Trinity in the Scriptures: The Father supplied the voice; The Son is the highlight of it all; and the Holy Spirit was that dove that hovered over the Son, anointing Him of Himself.

As for the propers of the Old Rite, we see that they are all focused on Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Obviously, it is always the Introit that sets the mood for the celebration of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. In this case, part of the Introit of the feast today reads: let Thy father and Thy mother be joyful, and let her rejoice who bore Thee.

The Epistle tackles on what a Christian family should be; and even though St. Paul have no grasp on the full story of Christ's childhood, he clearly understood that He was born of a woman and born under the Law (cf. Gal. 4:4). And so because Paul has this concept of Jesus's family, he somehow applied it in his writings.

But as always, it is the message of the Gospel reading which strikes home. Jesus intentionally left Himself behind without the knowledge of Mary and Joseph to deal with His Father's business. And indeed He dealt with the priests and doctors of His Temple, since Jesus is God. Yet, the end of the story tells us that Jesus became subject to Mary and Joseph as He grew in age and wisdom.

So what does this imply?

Simple. The Lord of Wisdom has manifested His Father's wisdom, but the same Lord of Wisdom displayed it through humility and childlikeness. Jesus has shown Himself and His wisdom through immersing Himself to the humility of having a sense of mission. And if we like to imitate Him, and share in the wisdom He possesses in Himself, we must be like little children, since the Lord Himself practiced it.

So, just the same, we ask ourselves: Have I considered to ask myself to know what my mission in life is> Will I follow Jesus as He fulfilled the will of His Father in heaven and obeyed Mary, His Mother, and Joseph, His Guardian?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PRAYING THE COLLECT

Almighty ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptized in the River Jordan and as the Holy Ghost descended upon Him, solemnly declared Him Thine beloved Son, grant that Thy children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Ghost, may always be well pleasing to Thee. O Lord Jesus Christ, who, being subject to Mary and Joseph, didst sanctify home life with unspeakable virtues: grant, that, by the aid of both, we may be taught by the example of Thy Holy Family, and attain to eternal fellowship with it: Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end. Amen.

The Name that united the world: Reflection and insight on the celebrations of the First Sunday of the Civil Year

How is it going?

It looks like we are going to be back to the normal grind in the coming weekdays, and so I would like to relate this reflection insight with our everyday activities as we celebrate the festivities this Sunday: the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus in the Extraordinary Form, and the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord in the Ordinary.

Ordinary Form (Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord Year A)

Prophecy: Is. 60:1-6
Arise, be enlightened, O Jerusalem: for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For behold darkness shall cover the earth, and a mist the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light, and kings in the brightness of thy rising. Lift up thy eyes round about, and see: all these are gathered together, they are come to thee: thy sons shall come from afar, and thy daughters shall rise up at thy side. Then shalt thou see, and abound, and thy heart shall wonder and be enlarged, when the multitude of the sea shall be converted to thee, the strength of the Gentiles shall come to thee. The multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Madian and Epha: all they from Saba shall come, bringing gold and frankincense: and shewing forth praise to the Lord.

Responsorial: Ps. 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13
R: Lord, every nation on earth will adore Thee.

Give to the king thy judgment, O God,
and to the king's son thy justice:
To judge thy people with justice,
and thy poor with judgment.

In his days shall justice spring up, and abundance of peace,
till the moon be taken away.
And he shall rule from sea to sea,
and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

The kings of Tharsis and the islands shall offer presents:
the kings of the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts:
And all kings of the earth shall adore him:
all nations shall serve him.

For he shall deliver the poor from the mighty:
and the needy that had no helper.
He shall spare the poor and needy:
and he shall save the souls of the poor.

Epistle: Eph. 3:2-3a, 5-6 (2-6)
Brethren, If yet you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me towards you: How that, according to revelation, the mystery has been made known to me…

(…as I have written above in a few words: As you reading, may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ…)

…which in other generations was not known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit: That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs and of the same body: and copartners of his promise in Christ Jesus, by the gospel.

Gospel: Mt. 2:1-12
At that time: when Jesus therefore was born in Bethlehem of Juda, in the days of king Herod, behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, saying: Where is he that is born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and are come to adore him. And king Herod hearing this, was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where Christ should be born. But they said to him: In Bethlehem of Juda. For so it is written by the prophet:

And thou Bethlehem the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, privately calling the wise men learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them; and sending them into Bethlehem, said: Go and diligently inquire after the child, and when you have found him, bring me word again, that I also may come and adore him. Who having heard the king, went their way; and behold the star which they had seen in the East, went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was. And seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they adored him: and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to Herod, they went back another way into their country.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

REFLECTIONS AND INSIGHTS

O Lord, the Gentiles shall walk in Thy light (cf. Is. 60:3) for in the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend (cf. Phil. 2:10). O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is Thy Name over the earth! (Ps. 8:1)

The readings of the Ordinary Form are like pieces of a puzzle that is about the manifestation of the Son of Man to all nations, and in the wisdom and will of the Holy Spirit, they fit together to form one cohesive theme: that "every nation on earth will adore the Lord" (cf. this Sunday's Responsorial). Meanwhile, we shall also add to this insight the Introit for the feast celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite: "In the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend" (Phil. 2:10).

In the Epistle of the Extraordinary Form, it features Peter as the Prince of the Apostles addressing the Chosen People spread throughout the world about Jesus Christ being "the cornerstone rejected by the builders". We can see here that some ambiguous statements can be said by non-Catholics against us: that "ONLY the name of Jesus can save" and not the invocation to the Holy Trinity. The proper understanding of this concept of Jesus' saving name is that it is indeed powerful, that demons shudder and flee at the mention or even the inscribed sight of His name. But we have to remember that Jesus is the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, and that He might have introduced the Sign of the Cross as He mightily ascended to heaven as He said "Go, therefore, and preach all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost" (Mt. 28:19, emphasis supplied). So it is ridiculous to fall for the concept that only the name of Jesus saves and not the Sign of the Cross.

In reflecting all these Biblical passages, we might say that if the concept of a "worldwide trend" existed two thousand years ago, it was the Name of Jesus and His birth. We believe that in this concept, it is the name of Jesus that united the world.

And it still does today.

The highlight of the readings of the Ordinary Form are the wise men that followed the star until it stood by the place where Christ was: collectively called as the Magi.

These men (by tradition numbered as three, but Biblical scholars dispute that there might have been more than three) have understood the Prophecy of Isaias by basing it on mathematical calculations, astronomical observations, and other scientific endeavours. They were considered as Gentiles for they are from outside Israel; maybe from Arabia, Persia, India, or even China. Since scientists and scholars like them are looked up by the commoners of their day, they might even be considered as noblemen (and tradition call them kings, hence the monicker "Three Kings"). And since they have understood the Isaianic prophecy very well, they have brought gifts of gold (a symbol of princely power), frankincense (a symbol of divine identity), and myrrh (a perfume used for embalming, a symbol of death) to the Child who is to be called the Prince of peace, the Emmanuel, and the Suffering Servant of the Lord.

These men, by virtue of their ardent search for the Divine Child, became the reference of the very prophecy they have studied.

But the story does not stop there.

In the age of the Church, Peter (as featured in the Extraordinary Form) and Paul (in the Ordinary) extensively toiled to preach to the Jews and to the Gentiles, respectively, that Jesus was the Messiah promised by God. So in this light, we realize that the Prophecy of Isaias that we read today is extended to all of us; for we are called to holiness through the Church which Jesus built upon Peter, that we are called to adore Jesus in the Holy Eucharist just as the Magi adored Him as a child; and that through the Sacraments we are changed just as the Magi returned to their lands on a different route.

In summary, the Church has been generous enough to let us experience what these wise men experienced, even if in a microcosm. She, the Bride of Christ, does this so through the Holy Mass. In a nutshell, our experience of the Mass can be simplified as this:

We come inside the house of the Lord
to adore Him as he makes Himself known and seen,
as He willed to be with us
to challenge us to  bear Him wherever we go.

As we return to the normal grind of the world after the festivities of Christmas, I hope that we would do so with a new resolve, proclaiming Jesus, the Name above all names, in all that we do.

So we ask ourselves: Will I be brave to seek the Child of Bethlehem and bear the glad tidings of His birth on my way home? Am I committed to allow the Child Jesus to "enter under my roof" even if I am not yet ready? Like Mary, will I strive to keep her Son and the glories of His birth in my heart?

PRAYING THE COLLECT

O God, Who didst constitute Thine only-begotten Son the Savior of Mankind, and didst bid Him to be called Jesus: mercifully grant, that we who venerate His holy Name on earth, may fully enjoy also the vision of Him in heaven. O Thou, Who on this day revealed Thine Only Begotten Son to the nations
by the guidance of a star, grant in Thy mercy, that we, who know Thee already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of Thy sublime glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost: One God, world without end.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Just as it is ridiculous to believe that the Sign of the Cross is not as powerful as the Name of Jesus, so are the materials circulated online saying that Pope Francis declared that "all religions are true", that there is no Hell, and other stuff that were misconstrued from him. Jimmy Akin, writing for the National Catholic Register, explains:

Some Internet sites are reporting that Pope Francis has declared that “all religions are true,” that there is no hell, and other provocative things.

But the whole thing is an Internet hoax.

Here are 5 things to know and share . . .

1) What is being attributed to Pope Francis?
Among other things, he is claimed to have said:
“Through humility, soul searching, and prayerful contemplation we have gained a new understanding of certain dogmas. The church no longer believes in a literal hell where people suffer. This doctrine is incompatible with the infinite love of God. God is not a judge but a friend and a lover of humanity. God seeks not to condemn but only to embrace. Like the fable of Adam and Eve, we see hell as a literary device. Hell is merely a metaphor for the isolated soul, which like all souls ultimately will be united in love with God” Pope Francis declared.
In a speech that shocked many, the Pope claimed “All religions are true, because they are true in the hearts of all those who believe in them. What other kind of truth is there? In the past, the church has been harsh on those it deemed morally wrong or sinful. Today, we no longer judge. Like a loving father, we never condemn our children. Our church is big enough for heterosexuals and homosexuals, for the pro-life and the pro-choice! For conservatives and liberals, even communists are welcome and have joined us. We all love and worship the same God.”

2) Where did the hoax come from?
It originally appeared on a blog called Diversity Chronicle.
The post that contains it apparently was written by the site’s creator, Erik Thorson.
Subsequently, the story has been recycled elsewhere on the Internet, such as in the “Entertainment” section of VacancyNigerians.com.

3) How do we know it’s a hoax?
Through several means. One is the fact that the piece itself claims Pope Francis was speaking at the conclusion of the Third Vatican Council:
For the last six months, Catholic cardinals, bishops and theologians have been deliberating in Vatican City, discussing the future of the church and redefining long-held Catholic doctrines and dogmas. The Third Vatican Council, is undoubtedly the largest and most important since the Second Vatican Council was concluded in 1962. Pope Francis convened the new council to “finally finish the work of the Second Vatican Council.” While some traditionalists and conservative reactionaries on the far right have decried these efforts, they have delighted progressives around the world.
The Third Vatican Council concluded today with Pope Francis announcing that Catholicism is now a “modern and reasonable religion, which has undergone evolutionary changes.
Of course, there has been no Third Vatican Council.
If there had been, it would have been all over the news for months, and every semi-informed Catholic would be aware of it.
Ecumenical councils are huge events in the life of the Church, and modern media and the Catholic Internet would have focused on it intensively.

4) How else do we know it’s a hoax?
The site which originated it contains a disclaimer, which states:
The original content on this blog is largely satirical.
“I ceased in the year 1764 to believe that one can convince one’s opponents with arguments printed in books. It is not to do that, therefore, that I have taken up my pen, but merely so as to annoy them, and to bestow strength and courage on those on our own side, and to make it known to the others that they have not convinced us.” – Georg Christoph Lichtenberg.
It is in the spirit of the above quote that I write. Who am I you may ask? My name is Erik Thorson. I created this blog for my own personal amusement.

5) Are there other resources exposing this hoax?
Sure. For example, there is also a Snopes page on this subject.

I hope this article got it all sorted out.
